En 2012 tuve la ocasión de asistir a 2 conciertos de Sleep. Uno en el festival Roadburn y otro dentro del difunto festival Asymmetry en Wroctaw. Por diversos motivos no pude disfrutar de ellos tal como me hubiese gustado y llegamos a 2019 y surge la oportunidad de verles en una de mis salas de conciertos favoritas (Progresja) en el mes de Abril previo a su actuación en el festival Roadburn de Tilburg.
In 2012 I had the opportunity to attend 2 concerts of Sleep. One at the Roadburn festival and another at the (now defunct) Asymmetry festival in Wrocław. For various reasons I could not enjoy them as I would have liked and in 2019 there was a chance to see them live in Warsaw at one of my favorite concert clubs (Progresja) on 9th of April prior to their performance at the Roadburn festival in Tilburg.
Así que, durante mis vacaciones, aproveché para desplazarme hasta Varsovia y tener un perfecto aperitivo mi viaje al Roadburn. Como aperitivo teníamos a 2 grandes bandas polacas: Sunnata y Belzebong. La tarde prometía por anticipado.
So, during my holidays, I took the opportunity to travel to Warsaw and have a perfect aperitif previously to Roadburn. As an introduction we had 2 great Polish bands: Sunnata and Belzebong. The evening sounds promising.

Y así, a las 19:30 empezaban puntualmente Sunnata. Con sus temas nuevos del album Outlands han conseguido un sonido más hipnótico que añadir a su ya interesante mezcla de doom con drone y otros estilos.
And so, at 19:30 pm, Sunnata began on time. With their new songs from the album Outlands they have achieved a more hypnotic sound to add to their already interesting mix of doom with drone and other styles.
Así que pudimos disfrutar de nuevo de unos 45 minutos de concierto. En esta ocasión, Mateusz de la banda Rosk estuvo a cargo del bajo debido a algún problema que desconozco de su bajista. Esperemos que no sea nada importante.
So we were able to enjoy about 45 minutes of concert. On this occasion, Mateusz of the band Rosk was in charge of the bass due to some problem that I do not know about their bass player. Let’s hope nothing serious, these people of Sunnata are really cools guys and great performers.

Los siguientes en actuar fueron Belzebong a los que me sorprendió ver actuar sin su habitual descarga de humo acompañándoles (más todavía cuando Sunnata si habían hecho uso de él). Desconozco si fueron problemas técnicos o no, pero esto no hizo más que permitir ver más claramente su actuación.
The following ones performing were Belzebong to which I was surprised to see them without their usual smoke accompanying them (even more so when Sunnata had made use of it). I don’t know if they were technical problems or not, but this only made it possible to see them play more clearly.

Y dieron el todo delante de sus padres espirituales, debo decir que incluso en momentos superaron la densidad de estos. Aunque ya son reconocidos a nivel internacional, debo insistir a quien no los conozca y le guste la música doom instrumental que no deje de oírlo y especialmente en directo si tiene ocasión.
And they gave everything in front of their spiritual parents, I must say that even in moments they exceeded their density. Although they are already recognized internationally, I must insist to those who don’t know them and like the instrumental doom music that you should give them a chance and especially to see them live if such occasion presents to you.

Por último, y tras un cambio rápido, una introducción in diálogos de la NASA nos daba paso a la estrella de la noche. SLEEP.
Finally, after a quick change, an introduction with dialogues from NASA gave way to the star of the night. SLEEP.
Debo decir que musicalmente y a nivel de sonido, cada vez que veo un concierto de Sleep está claro que toda su fama y categoría de leyenda es plenamente merecida.
I must say that musically and sonically, every time I see a concert of Sleep it’s clear that all their fame and category of legend is fully deserved.

En especial, en esta ocasión debo resaltar a Al Cisneros que consiguió arrasar con el sonido de su bajo el escenario, dando un nivel sublime. Por otro lado, Matt Pike ha venido sufriendo algunos problemas de salud que de ningún modo mermaron su trabajo en directo (nadie podría decirlo) y en conjunto todo sonó como debía.
In particular, this time I have to highlight Al Cisneros who managed to destroy the stage with the sound of his bass, giving a sublime level. On the other hand, Matt Pike has been suffering some health problems that in no way diminished his work live (nobody could say about this problems at all) and everything sounded as it should.
Otra cosa bien distinto es la comunicación en la banda. Con Al y Matt cada uno en un extremo del escenario, solo en momentos puntuales se juntaban en el centro y parecía que era su batería Jason Roeder quien hacia de nexo entre ellos.
Another very different thing is the communication in the band. With Al and Matt each on one end of the stage, only at specific moments they met in the center and it seemed that it was their drummer Jason Roeder who was the link between them.
A nivel musical muy bien, pero parecía en ciertos momentos que cada uno tocaba por su lado (visualmente). Esto mismo pude comprobar incluso unos días después en el festival Roadburn, pero eso ya es tema de otro artículo.
An excellent musical level, but it seemed at certain moments that each one played by his side (visually). This same I could even check a few days later at the Roadburn festival, but that is already the subject of another article.

De todos modos, mereció la pena 100 % ver el concierto. La elección de los teloneros fue fantástica y solo me queda agradecer a Metalmind la perfecto organización y a Progresja tener un fantástico lugar para ver conciertos en Varsovia. Espero repetir cuanto antes.
Anyway, it was worth 100% to see the concert. The choice of opening acts was fantastic and I can only thank Metalmind for the perfect organization and Progresja for a fantastic place to see concerts in Warsaw. I hope to repeat as soon as possible.
